Vision Screening Letter to Parents

Dear Parents,

In 2001, the Kansas Legislature KSA72-5205 was amended to state that:

Each pupil needing assistance in achieving mastery of basic reading, writing, and mathematics skills shall be encouraged to obtain an eye examination by an optometrist or opthalmologist to determine if the pupil suffers from conditions which impair the ability to read. Expense for such examination, if not reimbursed through Medicaid, Healthwave, private insurance or other governmental or private program, shall be the responsibility of the pupil’s parent or guardian.

A school vision screening does not obtain an exact diagnosis, but is used to help identify students who have a risk of refractive error and to refer them to have a professional eye exam. We at USD 438 strongly encourage parents of pupils who receive any special services to obtain an eye examination by an optometrist or ophthalmologist, regardless of their school screening results, to determine if the student suffers from any eye conditions that could possibly impair his or her ability to read. Early identification and treatment may lead to improved academic performance or help to identify or remove a barrier to learning. We also always welcome receiving a copy of your student’s exam results to update their school record when they visit their eye doctor. Please feel free to contact the Health office at 620-672-5651 if you have any concerns.
